Pear crumble pie

Becky Elliot and her children have made this dessert literally thousands of times, primarily as a fundraiser at the annual Courtland Pear Fair.

Ingredients

1/2 cup sugar
2 to 3 heaping tbsp. flour
1/4 tsp. ginger
Dash nutmeg
7 to 8 pears, peeled and sliced (see note)
2 tsp. lemon juice
Deep dish pie shell, such as Pet-Ritz brand
Crumb topping:
6 tbsp. butter
2/3 cup brown sugar
2/3 cup flour
1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
1/4 tsp. cinnamon

Directions

Mix sugar, flour, ginger and nutmeg together. Add pears and toss lightly. Sprinkle with lemon juice and pile into pie crust.

Mix butter, brown sugar, flour, nuts and cinnamon together for crumb topping. Gently press onto pie. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes.

Note: Pears should be firm and just turning yellow.

Serves 6 to 8
